Phoenix

The cohort worked the hard questions: what a PM is really for, and how clarity, pace, and integrity show up once the work gets real.

Session Outcomes

Phoenix worked the full day with four table groups.

The cohort spent the day working through what a project manager is really for, and each of the three principles came up in the day’s work.

Establishing Clarity

A timed paper-airplane build made the point without a lecture. Hands started folding before anyone pinned down what “good” even looked like. Their own verdict: a checklist gives you the steps, not proof the team read them the same way. The day’s top gap named the same thing: assign the team, spell out the roles, and write the plan before the work starts.

Controlling Advancement

“Ready, shoot, aim” was the phrase that stuck, naming the pull to start before the contract is signed or the plan exists. The counter-move they landed on: set the right pace on purpose, because moving fast on an unclear ask just gets you to the wrong place sooner.

Protecting Integrity

The longest stretch was the conversation about money and mission. Is a project manager’s first job the numbers, or the client and the team? The room worked its way to “business ownership”: every design, client, and team call is also a business call, and someone owns the whole outcome, not just their slice of it.

The takeaway

Run the project like a business you own. Get clear before you move, own the result rather than the tasks you handed off, and protect the value for the client, the team, and the firm as one thing.

Each table then drew where it is headed as PMs. Four different metaphors, the same three instincts underneath.

Where we’re headed, as Phoenix drew it

Four tables produced four metaphors, with clarity, advancement, and integrity underneath each one.

Recipe for success

A Ratatouille-style kitchen, with Remy at the pot holding a “QC” spoon, a recipe scroll (a pinch of integrity, a dash of creativity, a helping of Q/A) and the flames below labeled “Deadline.” Aspiration, plus the discipline of tasting the work before it leaves the kitchen.
